Frederick
High School
Tablet/Laptop Program
The focus
of the Learning With Tablets Program at
Frederick
High School is to prepare
students for their future, a world of digital technology and information.
As we enter the twenty-first century, excellence in education
requires that technology is seamlessly integrated throughout the educational
program. Increasing access to
technology is essential for that future, and the learning tool of these
twenty-first century students is the tablet computer. The individual use of
tablets is a way to empower students to learn at their full potential and to
prepare them for the real world of college and the workplace. Tablets
encourage students to solve problems and think critically by stimulating
analytical thinking. Learning results from the continuous dynamic
interaction among students, educators, parents and the extended community.
Technology immersion does not diminish the vital role of the teacher. To the
contrary, it transforms the teacher from a director of learning to a
facilitator of learning.
Learning with tablets integrates technology into the curriculum anytime,
anyplace.
The
policies, procedures and information within this document apply to all
tablets used at Frederick
High School, including any
other device considered by the superintendent to come under this policy.
Teachers may set additional requirements for computer use in their
classroom.
The tablet/laptop selected for use at the Frederick High School
are the
HP 2730 Tablet and HP 6930 Laptop.

Tablets will be distributed each fall during on the first day of school
Parents & students must sign
and return the Tablet Computer Protection plan, Student Pledge
, and the Acceptable Use Policy/Student Account Agreement documents
before the tablet can be issued to their child.
The Tablet Computer Protection plan
outlines three options for families to protect the tablet investment for the
school district. Please review
the Tablet Computer Protection plan included in this handbook.
Tablets will be collected at the end of each school year for maintenance,
cleaning and software installations.
Students will retain their original Tablet each year while enrolled
at FHS.
Students are responsible for the general care of the tablet they have been
issued by the school. Tablets
that are broken or fail to work properly must be taken to the technology
team which includes Mrs. Rall, Mrs. Hertel, and Mrs. Barondeau.
3.1 General Precautions
Ø
No food or drink is
allowed next to your tablet while it is in use.
Ø
Cords, cables, and
removable storage devices must be inserted carefully into the tablet.
Ø
Students should never
carry their tablets while the screen is open, unless directed to do so by a
teacher.
Ø
Tablets should be shut
down before moving them to conserve battery life.
Ø
Tablets must remain free
of any writing, drawing, stickers, or labels that are not the property of
the Frederick Area
School District.
Ø
Tablets must never be left
in a car or any unsupervised area.
Ø
Students are responsible
for keeping their tablet’s battery charged for school each day.
Ø
Tablets should always be
at room temperature before booting.
If they are cold, condensation will form in the harddrive and destroy
it.
3.2 Carrying Tablets
The protective cases provided with tablets have sufficient padding to
protect the tablet from normal treatment and provide a suitable means for
carrying the computer within the school. The guidelines below should be
followed:
Ø
Tablets should always be
within the protective case when carried.
Ø
Some carrying cases can
hold other objects (such as folders and workbooks), but these must be kept
to a minimum to avoid placing too much pressure and weight on the Tablet
screen.
Ø
The tablets must be turned
off before placing it in the carrying case.
3.3 Screen Care
The tablet screens can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The
screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the
screen.
Ø
Do not lean on the top of
the tablet when it is closed.
Ø
Do not place anything near
the tablet that could put pressure on the screen.
Ø
Do not place anything in
the carrying case that will press against the cover.
Ø
Do not poke the screen.
Ø
Do not place anything on
the keyboard before closing the lid (e.g. pens, pencils, or disks).
Ø
Clean the screen with a
soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth.
Microfiber cloths work best
Ø
Do not pick up the tablet
or laptop by the screen as it loosens the hinges.
Tablets are intended for use at school each day.
In addition to teacher expectations for tablet use, school messages,
announcements, calendars and schedules will be accessed using the tablet
computer. Students must be
responsible to bring their tablet to all classes, unless specifically
advised not to do so by their teacher.
4.1 Tablets Left at Home
If students leave their tablet at home, they must immediately phone parents
to bring them to school. Repeat violations of this policy will result in
disciplinary action.
4.2 Tablet Undergoing Repair
Loaner tablets may be issued to students when they leave their
tablets for repair at the technology team.
4.3 Charging Your Tablet’s
Battery
Tablets must be brought to school each day in a fully charged condition.
Students need to charge their tablets each evening.
In cases where use of the tablet has caused batteries to become discharged,
students may be able to connect their computers to a power outlet in class
but all rooms are not able to support the electrical needs of every student.
4.4 Screensavers
Ø
Inappropriate media may not be used as a screensaver.
Ø
Presence of guns, weapons, pornographic materials, inappropriate
language,
alcohol, drug, gang related symbols or pictures will result in disciplinary
actions.
Ø
Passwords on screensavers are not to be used.
Ø
Hard drive passwords are forbidden.
If used, students may be responsible for the cost of replacement
hardware.
4.5 Sound
Sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the
teacher for instructional purposes.
4.6 Printing
Students may use printers in classrooms and computer lab with teachers’
permission during class or breaks.
5.1 Saving to the Home Directory
Students will be logging onto our network in order to
back up their work. Students
will have their own user account and folder on the network with ample space
to back up any school-related work.
The tablets will be set up with a Home
Directory/Documents in which students should save their work.
The Home Directory/Documents will automatically save a copy of
all student documents saved to the Home Directory/My Documents to the high
school server while they are on the high school network.
When a student adds a document to the Home Directory/My Documents
folder while working at home or away from school, that document will be
copied automatically to the school server when the student logs onto the
network at school through a synchronization process.
Additional folders in the Home Directory/Documents
may be created or added by the student. All student work should be
stored in one of the Home Directory/Documents
folders.
Only files stored in the Home Directory/Documents
will be automatically backed up and saved.
Student work saved to a different location on the computer will not
be saved to the high school server.
5.2 Saving data to Removable storage
devices
Students should also backup all of their work at
least once each week using removable file storage.
Removable memory cards may be purchased at a local retailer.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that
work is not lost due to mechanical failure or accidental deletion.
Computer malfunctions are not an acceptable excuse for not submitting work.
6.1 Originally Installed Software
The software originally installed by the FHS must remain on the tablet in
usable condition and be easily accessible at all times.
The tablet is supplied with Windows Vista Business operating system and with
additional software.
From time to time the
school may add software applications for use in a particular course. The
licenses for this software require that the software be deleted from tablets
at the completion of the course.
Periodic checks of tablets will be made to ensure that students have deleted
software that is no longer required in class and that the school has not
exceeded its licenses.
6.2 Virus Protection
The tablet has anti-virus protection software. This software will scan the
hard drive and floppy drive for known viruses on boot up. The virus software
will be upgraded from the network.
The school’s storage server and state e-mail server are also
installed with virus protection software and hardware.
6.3 Additional Software
It is the responsibility of individual students to be aware of additional
software programs and files loaded onto their tablet. Students are
responsible for maintaining the integrity of software required for
facilitating academic activities.
Ø
Any additional software
must be appropriate for the school environment and may not infringe on the
productivity of the classroom setting.
Ø
Students are responsible
for ensuring that only software that is licensed to their tablet is loaded
onto their computers.
Ø
Violent games and computer
images containing obscene or pornographic material are banned.
6.4 Inspection
Students may be selected at random to provide their tablet for inspection.
6.5 Procedure for re-loading software
If technical difficulties occur or illegal software is discovered, the hard
drive will then be re-formatted and re-imaged. The school does not accept
responsibility for the loss of any data deleted due to a re-format and
re-image.
6.6 Software upgrades
Upgrade versions of licensed software are available from time to time.
Students will be instructed
to upgrade their software from the school’s network periodically.
7.1
Educational
Purpose
Ø
The
Frederick Area Network has been established for a limited educational
purpose. The term “educational purpose” includes classroom activities and
career development.
Ø
The
Frederick Area Network has not been established as a public access service
or a public forum. Frederick
Area School
District has the right to place reasonable
restrictions on the material you access or post through the system. You are
also expected to follow the rules set forth in district policy and the law
in your use of the Frederick Area Network.
Ø
You may
not use the Frederick Area Network for commercial purposes. This means you
may not offer, provide, or purchase products or services through the
Frederick Area Network.
Ø
You may
not use the Frederick Area Network for political lobbying. But you may use
the system to communicate with elected representatives and to express your
opinion on political issues.
7.2
Student
Internet Access
Ø
Students
will have access to Internet World Wide Web information resources through
their classroom, library, or school computer lab.
Ø
Elementary students will have e-mail access only under their teacher’s
direct supervision using a classroom account. Elementary students may be
provided with individual e-mail accounts under special circumstances, at the
request of their teacher and with the approval of their parent.
Ø
Secondary
students may obtain an individual e-mail account with the approval of their
parents and as permitted by the district.
Ø
You and
your parent must sign an Account Agreement to be granted an individual
e-mail account on the Frederick Area Network. This agreement must be renewed
on an annual basis. Your parent can withdraw their approval at any time.
Ø
If
approved by your principal, you may create a personal Web page on the
Frederick Area Network. All material placed on you Web page must be
pre-approved in a manner specified by the school. Material placed on your
Web page must relate to your school and career preparation activities.
7.3
Unacceptable Uses
The following uses of the
Frederick Area Network are considered unacceptable.
Ø
Personal
Safety
a.
You will
not post personal contact information about yourself or other people.
Personal contact information includes your address, telephone, school
address, work address, etc.
b.
You will
not agree to meet with someone you have met online without your parent’s
approval. Your parent should accompany you to this meeting.
c.
You will
promptly disclose to your teacher or other school employee any message you
receive that is inappropriate or makes you feel uncomfortable.
Ø
Illegal Activities
a.
You will
not attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Frederick Area Network or to
any other computer system through the Frederick Area Network or go beyond
your authorized access. This includes attempting to log in through another
person’s account or access another person’s files. These actions are
illegal, even if only for the purpose of “browsing”.
b.
You will
not make deliberate attempts to disrupt the computer system or destroy data
by spreading computer viruses or by any other means. These actions are
illegal.
c.
You will
not use the Frederick Area Network to engage in any other illegal act, such
as arranging for a drug sale or the purchase of alcohol, engaging in
criminal gang activity, threatening the safety of person, etc.
Ø
System Security
a.
You are
responsible for your individual account and should take all reasonable
precautions to prevent others from being able to use your account. Under no
conditions should you provide you password to another person.
b.
You will
immediately notify a teacher or the system administrator if you have
identified a possible security problem. Do not go looking for security
problems, because this may be construed as an illegal attempt to gain
access.
c.
You will
avoid the inadvertent spread of computer viruses by following the district
virus protection procedures if you download software.
Ø
Inappropriate Language
a.
Restrictions against Inappropriate Language
apply to public message, private messages, and material posted on Web pages.
b.
You will
not use obscene, profane, lewd, vulgar, rude, inflammatory, threatening, or
disrespectful language.
c.
You will
not post information that could cause damage or a danger of disruption.
d.
You will
not engage in personal attacks, including prejudicial or discriminatory
attacks.
e.
You will
not harass another person. Harassment is persistently acting in a manner
that distresses or annoys another person. If you are told by a person to
stop sending them messages, you must stop.
f.
You will
not knowingly or recklessly post false or defamatory information about a
person or organization.
Ø
Respect for Privacy
a.
You
will not re-post a message that was sent to you privately without
permission of the person who sent you the message.
b.
You will
not post private information about another person.
Ø
Respecting Resource Limits
a.
You will
use the system only for educational and career development activities.
b.
You will
not store large files, including video and music, unless absolutely
necessary.
c.
You will
not post chain letters or engage in “spamming”. Spamming is sending an
annoying or unnecessary message to a large number of people.
d.
You will
check your e-mail frequently, delete unwanted messages promptly, and stay
within your e-mail quota.
e.
You will
subscribe only to high quality discussion group mail lists that are relevant
to your education or career development.
Ø
Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement
a.
You will
not plagiarize works that you find on the Internet. Plagiarism is taking the
ideas or writings of others and presenting them as if they were yours.
b.
You will
respect the rights of copyright owners. Copyright infringement occurs when
you inappropriately reproduce a work that is protected by a copyright. If a
work contains language that specifies appropriate use of that work, you
should follow the expressed requirements. If you are unsure whether or not
you can use a work, you should request permission from the copyright owner.
Copyright law can be very confusing. If you have questions ask a teacher.
Ø
Inappropriate Access to Materials
a.
You will
not use the Frederick Area Network to access materials that is profane or
obscene (pornography), that advocates illegal acts, or that advocates
violence or discrimination towards other people (hate literature). A special
exception may be made for hate literature if the purpose of your access is
to conduct research and both your teacher and parent have approved.
b.
If you
mistakenly access inappropriate information, you should immediately back
out and tell your teacher or another district employee. This will
protect you against a claim that you have intentionally violated this
policy.
c.
Your
parents should instruct you if there is additional material that they think
it would be inappropriate for you to access. The district fully expects that
you will follow your parent’s instructions in this matter.
7.4
Your Rights
Ø
Free Speech
a.
Your
right to free speech applies also to your communication on the Internet. The
Frederick Area Network is considered a limited forum, similar to the school
newspaper, and therefore the district may restrict your speech for valid
educational reasons. The district will not restrict your speech on the basis
of a disagreement with the opinions you are expressing.
Ø
Search and Seizure
a.
You
should expect only limited
privacy in the contents of your personal files on the district system. The
situation is similar to the rights you have in the privacy of your locker.
b.
Routine
maintenance and monitoring of the Frederick Area Network may lead to
discovery that you have violated this policy or the law.
c.
An
individual search will be conducted if there is reasonable suspicion that
you have violated this policy or the law. The investigation will be
reasonable and related to the suspected violation.
d.
Your
parents have the right at any time to request to see the contents of your
e-mail files.
e.
Random
monitoring of accounts does occur to ensure proper use of the system.
Ø
Due Process
a.
The
district will cooperate fully with local, state, or federal officials in any
investigation related to any illegal activities conducted through the
Frederick Area Network.
b.
In the event there is a claim that you have violated this policy in
your use of the Frederick Area Network, you and your parents will be
provided with a written notice of the suspected violation and an opportunity
to present an explanation before
a neutral administrator. Generally, the district follows the following: 1st
offense – 2 weeks computer usage suspension, 2nd offense – 4
weeks computer usage suspension, 3rd offense – 6 weeks computer
usage suspension, and further offenses will require board review and
possible action. These offenses are accumulative through a student’s
educational career and do not renew yearly. If an offense involves legal
issues the proper authorities will be notified.
c.
Additional restrictions may be placed on your use of your Internet
account.
Ø
Limitation of Liability
The
district makes no guarantee that the functions or the services provided by
or through the district system will be error-free or without defect. The
district will not be responsible for any damage you may suffer, including
but not limited to, loss of data or interruptions of service. The district
is not responsible for the accuracy or quality of the information obtained
through or stored on the system. The district will not be responsible for
financial obligations arising through the unauthorized use of the system.
Ø
Personal Responsibility
a.
When you
are using the Frederick Area Network, it may feel like you can more easily
break a rule and not get caught.
This is not really true because whenever you do something on a network you
leave little “electronic footprints,” so to odds of getting caught are
really about the same as they are in the real world.
b.
But the fact that you can do something or think you
can do something without being caught does not make it right to do so.
Even if you don’t get caught, there is always one person who will
know whether you have done wrong – and that person is you. Your use of the
Internet can be a mirror that will show you what kind of a person you are.
8.1 Tablet Identification
Student tablets will be labeled in the manner specified by the school.
Tablets can be identified in the following ways:
Ø
Record of serial number
and machine name tag
Ø
Individual User account
name and password
8.2 Password Protection
Students are expected to password protect their tablets by setting a complex
start-up password and keeping that password confidential.
8.3 Storing Your Tablet
When students are not monitoring tablets, they should be stored in a
classroom. Nothing should be placed on top of the tablet, when stored in the
classroom. Students are
encouraged to take their tablets home every day after school, regardless of
whether or not they are needed.
Tablets should not be stored in a student’s vehicle at school or at home.
8.4 Tablets Left in Unsupervised
Areas
Under no circumstances should tablets be left in unsupervised areas.
Unsupervised areas include the school grounds and campus, the cafeteria,
locker rooms, library, unlocked classrooms, bathrooms and hallways.
Any computer left in these areas is in danger of being stolen.
Unsupervised tablets will be confiscated by staff and taken to the main
office. Disciplinary action may
be taken for leaving your tablet in an unsupervised location.
9.1 HP Warranty
This
coverage is purchased by the
Frederick
Area School
District as part of the purchase price of the
equipment. HP warrants the tablets from defects in materials and
workmanship. This limited warranty covers normal use, mechanical breakdown
or faulty construction and will provide replacement parts necessary to
repair the tablet or tablet replacement. The HP warranty does not
warrant against damage caused by misuse, abuse, accidents or computer
viruses. Please report all
tablet problems to the technology team.
9.2 Accidental Damage Protection
The Frederick Area School District
has purchased through HP coverage to protect the tablets against accidental
damage such as: liquid spills, accidental drops, power surges, and natural
disasters. This coverage does not provide for damage caused by fire,
theft, loss, misuse, intentional or frequent damage or cosmetic damage. HP
will assess the tablet damage and repair or replace the machine at no cost
if the damage is determined to be accidental, infrequent, and within the
protection guidelines.
The tablet is covered with a three-year HP Warranty and Accidental
Protection Plan. FHS technicians
will service repairs and replacements for detective parts and acts of
accidental damage. Please report
all tablet problems to the technology team.
One caveat to the accidental damage plan is that one tablet can only
be serviced three times in a year.
So take good care of your tablet.
9.3
School District
Protection
School District
Protection is available for students and parents to cover tablet replacement
in the event of theft, loss, or accidental damage by fire.
The protection cost is $25.00 annually for each tablet with a maximum
cost of $50.00 per family and includes a $200.00 additional charge for each
claim.
Students or parents may wish to carry their own personal insurance to
protect the tablet in cases of theft, loss, or accidental damage by fire.
Please consult with your insurance agent for details about your
personal coverage of the tablet computer.
9.4 Claims
All insurance claims must be reported to the main office.
Students or parents must file a police or fire report and bring a
copy of the report to the superintendent’s office before a tablet can be
repaired or replaced with School District Protection.
Fraudulent reporting of theft, loss, or accidental damage by fire will be
turned over to the police and insurance company for prosecution.
A student making a false report will also be subject to disciplinary
action.
The District will work with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department to
alert pawnshops and police departments in the area to be aware of this
district-owned equipment.
The Technology team coordinates the repair work for tablets.
Services provided include the following:
Ø
Hardware maintenance and
repairs

1.
Can I use the HP 2730/6930 tablet/laptop computer and software
throughout my career at FHS?
Yes. While the rapid pace of
computer technology guarantees that more advanced units will be available
before you graduate, your unit will be powerful enough for your classroom
work throughout your career at FHS. The available software will be usable in
upper level as well as entry-level course work. Of course, just as upper
level courses require different textbooks, you may need additional software
as you move through the curriculum.
The only exception is that Freshman will move to the HP 2730 when
they are Sophomores.
2.
What if I
already have another model or brand of tablet computer?
You will be required to use the school district issued tablet for school
purposes. This is necessary to
ensure that you have a computer that gives you network capability and the
ability to run the software that you will need in your courses. The Frederick Area School District
is also limited to provide maintenance service or assistance for only the HP
devices. For these reasons,
other tablet computers will not be used on the Frederick Area
School District network at
school.
3.
Can I
have my tablet computer this summer?
No. All tablets will be collected at the end of the school year for general
maintenance, cleaning, and software installation purposes.
Students will receive their tablets again at their orientation
session in the fall to ensure that everyone receives complete information
about the computer, including its warranty, insurance coverage, software
usage and FHS’s policy regarding the ethical use of computers.
4.
Where do
I find a HP authorized service technician?
Frederick Area School
has certified technicians working in the district that can do warranty
repair work. If you have a
question or a service need, take your tablet to the technology team.
5.
What
about insurance against theft or breakage through carelessness?
Your tablet computer is very portable and very valuable, making it an
attractive target for thieves. Therefore, the
Frederick
Area School
District tablet protection is recommended.
The protection covers the tablet for a $25.00 payment. You will be
responsible for paying an additional charge of $200.00 for each theft or
loss claim.
The best
insurance is to take care of your tablet/laptop.
Do not leave your tablet/laptop in the building, classroom, or car
unattended. Always know where your tablet/laptop is! Above all, take your
computer home each night.
6.
Does FHS
provide maintenance on my HP 2730/HP 6930?
Yes. The technology team will coordinate maintenance for students. Students
enrolled at FHS will be covered by a maintenance agreement for items
described in the HP warranty agreement and Accidental Protection Plan.
Please consult the warranty agreement so that you understand what is
and what is not covered.
7.
What will
I do without a computer in my classes if my tablet unit is being repaired or
while I am replacing it if it is lost or stolen?
Frederick High School stocks a limited number of
tablet computers that can be loaned out on a first come, first-serve basis.
You will be able to apply for a loaner unit with the technology staff. If
you are in possession of a loaner, treat it as if it were your own computer.
You will be responsible for any damage to the unit or for its loss.
8.
If I
purchase software in addition to the available software provided through
FHS, will the tech team staff load it for me?
No.
9.
Will I
need to buy a modem?
No. A modem is built into the HP devices.
10.
Will
there be facilities to back up the files I create on my tablet?
Yes. When you save your
documents to the Home Directory/Documents folder, your files are
automatically saved to the school storage server.
You are also encouraged to save your documents to a removable memory.
11.
What if I
want to add options to my tablet later?
Only the Frederick
Area School
District is authorized to add options and
upgrades to your computer.
12.
What if I
want to run another operating system on my tablet?
Only the operating system chosen by the Frederick Area
School District will be
authorized to run on a student-issued tablet computer.
13.
Will I be
given a new battery if mine goes bad?
The tablet battery will be replaced by the manufacturer for defects.
You will be responsible for charging your battery and proper battery
maintenance.
14.
What has
the school done to help prevent students from going to inappropriate sites?
We have a
software product which is designed to help monitor all Internet sites that
students attempt to access. This software blocks inappropriate sites and
also logs a history of every site that each user opens. All students
who attempt to find inappropriate sites will be directed to the technology
coordinator and superintendent’s office.
15.
Are
Student Tablets subject to school “snooping”; what if they bring their
tablet in for repairs and “objectionable data” is detected?
Inappropriate material on tablets should be reported to the classroom
teacher, superintendent, or technology staff immediately upon
identification. Students who
have “objectionable data” on their tablet but have failed or chosen not to
report it, will be referred to the technology coordinator and
superintendent’s office.
16.
If the
accessories to my tablet are lost or stolen, how much will it cost to
replace them?
